How to Inspect an Automatic Door
Regular inspection of your automatic doors is essential for safety, performance, and compliance. Follow these four simple steps to perform a quick daily safety check.
Schedule a Daily Check
Inspect each automatic door at least once per day, ideally at the same time each morning when power is turned on or after any power interruption. Conduct your checks during low-traffic periods to avoid interruptions and ensure a safe inspection environment.
Test the Activation Sensors
Walk toward the door at a moderate speed from different angles. The door should open smoothly as you approach, without hesitation or impact, and remain open while you’re in the detection zone. For two-way traffic doors, repeat the process from both sides. Step out of the sensor area and after a short delay, the door should close smoothly.
Verify Safety Zones and Beams
Approach the safety side of the swinging door first, then have someone approach from the activating side. As long as you remain in the safety area, the door should not move. If your system uses electronic holding beams, cover the beam with your hand and stay still, the door should remain open. Once the obstruction is removed, it should close after the standard delay.
Observe and Exercise Caution
Always watch how people approach and use your automatic doors. Encourage straight-on approaches rather than angled ones to prevent sensor misreads. If any sensor or safety feature fails, such as the door swinging unexpectedly, stop using the door and contact an AAADM-certified technician immediately.
